New data has shown that the Labrador Retriever is the UK’s favourite dog with more than half a million of the breed tagged in the country.
Ten years of microchip data showed that 509,000 Labradors are microchipped with pet registration companies AnimalCare and Petlog. Throughout the UK, the Labrador has topped the list almost every county!
Runners up for the top spot included the Jack Russell Terrier with more than 376,000 tagged and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier with 356,000 tagged.
However, the data included 5 million dogs and showed clear evidence that the breed of dog we choose could be entirely down to where we live. In fact, those living in the West of the UK were more likely to choose a Jack Russell Terrier above any other dog breed; while for those in Liverpool, the designer breed the Shih Tzu came out tops.
Smaller breeds such as the Dachshund were preferred by Londoners, apparently due to the likelihood of a smaller living space. However, up in the Shetlands the intelligent Border Collie reigns supreme and 500 miles south, down in Sunderland, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier topped lists.
The outcome of this research will surely change once new laws come into force making it mandatory for all dogs to be microchipped.
