It is now the law for dog ID tags to be worn while your dog is in a public place.
Control of Dogs Order 1992 states:
“Every dog while on a public highway or place of public resort must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on it or a plate or badge attached to it.”

What information is required on dog ID tags?
The owner’s name and address is required to be displayed on your dog’s ID tag. We recommend displaying your surname, your house name or number and your full postcode. We also suggest adding at least one contact telephone number, ideally your mobile phone number and another contact number which could be another member of the family or your vets number.
With effect from 6th April 2016, it is a legal requirement in England, Scotland and Wales for dogs to be microchipped.
New puppies must also be microchipped by the age of 8 weeks.
