There’s nothing a dog loves more than splashing around in the shallow waters on the beach or running the vast open expanses of golden sand that we’re spoilt with down in Devon. Being the only county in England with two separate coastlines it ensures that you’re never more than an hour away from hearing the sounds of the sea rolling towards the beach. To inspire you, we have picked out some of the best dog friendly beaches in Devon so you can plan your next dog friendly holiday or day out with your four legged friend in the county.
Woolacombe, North Devon
Woolacombe is often found towards the top of the pile when it comes to the best beaches in the UK, in fact it was even ranked 13th in the world. There’s a three mile stretch of golden sand to enjoy, with some of the most picturesque coastline in the UK surrounding the beach it’s easy to see why visitors flock to this dog friendly beach in Devon throughout the year. Dogs are welcomed all year but some restrictions do apply during the summer season, but there is still plenty of beach for a game of fetch!
Westward Ho!, North Devon
Slightly around the coastline from Woolacombe towards Cornwall and you’ll come across Westward Ho! beach. The long sandy beach is backed by the pebble ridge which divides the beach from Northam Burrows Country Park. Both the beach and country park are ideal for long walks, beware though as it can get blustery on the North Devon coastline.
Salcombe Beach, South Devon
Moving down to the southern coast of Devon and you’ll reach a favourite haunt of the rich and famous in Devon, Salcombe. Sir Clive Woodward, Kate Bush, and Sir Michael Parkinson all own properties in the town but it is the beach that we’re interested in, particularly Salcombe North Sands. Dogs are welcome on the beach all year round and will love splashing around in the water while you enjoy the spectacular views over the Kingsbridge Estuary in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
Strete Gate Beach, South Devon
Located away from the hustle and bustle, Strete Gate Beach is the perfect starting point for a long coastal walk with your dog. Head south and you’ll find a three mile coastal bar separating the sea and Slapton Ley, there aren’t many places more beautiful to spend a summer’s day wandering the Devon coast. The beach itself is shingle and wonderfully clean ensuring you can have a worry free visit.
