However if – like me – you also want to gift your fur baby with something made by your own fair hands then look no further. I have travelled the length and breadth of the interweb in order to find us all some sumptuous dog treat recipes to try out this festive season!
Apple cheddar dog biscuits (from marthastewart.com)
Ingredients:
- 2 cups barley flour
- 1/2 cup oatmeal
- 1/3 cup grated cheddar cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Method:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Mix together all ingredients and about 3 tablespoons water to form a dough.
- Roll out mixture between two sheets of plastic wrap to 1/4-inch thick; remove plastic wrap and cut out biscuits with a 3 1/2-inch cookie cutter
- Space biscuits 1 inch apart on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 30 minutes until nicely browned and firm
Basic dog biscuits (from cesarsway.com)
Ingredients:
- 2 ½ cups flour
- 1 tsp. salt (or less)
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. beef or chicken broth/stock
- ½ cup hot water
Method:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Dissolve stock in hot water
- Add remaining ingredients
- Knead dough until it forms a ball
- Roll dough until ½ inch thick
- Cut into shapes
- Place dough pieces on lightly greased sheet
- Cook for 30 minutes
Peanut butter biscuits (from bullwrinkle.com)
- 1 package dry yeast
- 1/2 cup lukewarm water
- 1 cup mashed potatoes
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup chicken stock
- 1 cup chunky peanut butter
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup rye flour
- 1/2 cup rice flour
- 1 egg
- 2 cups all-purpose white flour
Method:
- Preheat oven to 325 ° F (165 ° C)
- In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in water
- In a large saucepan, mix together the potatoes, milk, molasses, stock, and peanut butter. Heat, stirring frequently until boiling
- Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature
- Add yeast mixture. Gradually blend in the egg, wheat, rye, and rice flours
- Add enough white flour to form a stiff dough.
- Transfer to a floured surface and knead until smooth
- Using cookie cutters, cut out biscuits
- Bake for 45 minutes. Let cool overnight
